Superpoints Weekend part 2

After the success of the 2008 Superpoints in the Alps we opted for a return visit in 2009. Flew into Bergamo in Italy, so a three hour drive was required to get to Briancon this time. We were rewarded with deep snow and plenty of sun-shine again, a truly superb weekend.

After flying into Bergamo, Italy a long drive was required to reach Briancon, and our first target was service 17418 the 12:50 to Marseille St Charles, booked for a Class 67/400. With minutes to spare we made it to our location chosen on Google Earth back in the UK! Disappointment set in as we saw Class 81500 bi-mode unit 81621 heading our way, but was soon forgotten as the weekend progressed. Friday 20th February 2009
Shortly after joining the Grenoble line at Aspres-so-Buech 67320, 67363 wind up for the short hop to Veins with the 11:11 Lyon Part Dieu to Briancon (RE 17357). As usual this service was late, 30 minutes on this occasion! 21st February 2009
67612 arrives at Veynes with the RRR P/P set on its way to Grenoble, service 85668, 11:53 from Briancon on Saturday 21st February 2009. Veynes is the main train crew depot in the area due to the fact its the junction for Marseille, Briancon, Grenoble and Valence services. Two shunting loco's are also be found here, much reduced from the days when a 36 track roundhouse was in use. Set in the Hautes-Alpes region, it has a small population of 3200 and started its love of the railway in 1875 when the line from Marseille arrived. A railway museum is located in the town, and well worth a visit.
Into service on 5th December 1967, 67301 has survived well especially as its not a push pull machine so less useful these days as freight work has long gone for this class. Seen here at Grenoble with a Annecy service on 23rd February 2009 whilst allocated to Chambery for services on the Annecy to Valence corridor. Its still hauling passenger service in 2013 being based at Nevers, the Montluçon – Bourges corail trains are a regular run for this machine. For a shot of 67301 at Montluçon in 2012 click here
With the Ecrins mountains dominating the view Chambery Fret pair 67313, 67483 near journeys end at Briancon with the 22:32 from Paris Austerlitz (15893) only 15 minutes down. Snow was up to 3 foot deep in this area just south of the station. 21st February 2009. 67313 was withdrawn on 1st June 2009.
Friday 20th February 2009 and 67438 sits at the back of Briancon depot awaiting its next turn of duty which turned out to be train 5790 20:30 Briancon to Paris Austerlitz (to Valence) with 67369 as company. The loco is still in use bassed up Longueau, Amiens as its a STF Aquitaine machine.
67612 leaves Veynes with the RRR P/P set on its way to Grenoble, service 85668, 11:53 from Briancon on Saturday 21st February 2009.
Chambery passenger machine 67378 hauls its RRR set of push/pull stock near Pont la Dame with service 85613, 14:13 Grenoble to Gap on a glorious 21st February 2009. The loco was was withdrawn on 6th May 2010.
